Sept '99 Introducing the Memory Cells,
electronic music marriage....
The band Memory Cells has come to an end. They started - as stated on the sleevenotes of 'Night' - on 30th January 1999 and ceased to be a functioning band at the close of a Belfast show on 11th May 2001. Between that point and a final jam held in March 2002 the band had been working in isolation on loops and mixing and editing a handful of tracks from recordings mostly dating from the rehearsals leading up to the 2 gigs in May. It was thought at the time that these would form the basis for the third album and that more recordings would complete it. The final jam was hoped to be the start of this long put off process but not long after it was agreed to bring the band to an end. The members still remain close friends and are very proud of all the releases that bear their name.
At time of writing the current musical activities of the three members are as follows, Stephen Rennicks is recording electronic music under the name Secret Society and DJing. Anthony Carrol continues to be a member of The Wormholes with occasional input from Adrienne Flynn.
The albums 'Night' and 'We Have Found the New Jerusalem' will continue to be stocked only at www.roadrecs.com as long as stock remains.
memorycells@eircom.net
remains operative for any messages regarding Memory Cells or for individual members
which will be forwarded to them. Their website at www.groov.ie/memorycells
will also remain operative.
The video
for 'The Slow Flash' was shown on latest No Disco, you can catch
the repeat this Friday, Network 2, about 3am, for our overseas friends it also
gets shown on the digital channel Tara, not sure when, soon though.
Stephen
Rennicks is returning to make his second DJ appearance at Decals late bar
club, 'Bleep', Bodkins, Bolton St., Dublin on Friday 14th Dec. Toirse
is also on the bill, this is always a good night and its free.
Daniel Figgis has finished a remix of stuff from 'Night' and this will appear on a compilation on Dot Dot Dot records next year. Memory Cells have returned the favour and submitted a remix of 'Glimmerer' from his classic 'Skipper' album. Not known whether this will appear on the remix album being completed by him but they had fun doing it. At least one other compilation appearance is on cards, plans for their own releases next year are vague so far, but recordings will continue.
The Wormholes have a track on 'Lazybird Live Volume 1' compilation out now. They also have a new member on guitar, Fergus Cullen. We'll keep you posted on events as they transpire. 'Lazybird' is a really good improv club every Sunday upstairs in International Bar, Dublin.
We usually try to list upcoming stuff at end of these lists but don't have time today, so you should probably subscribe to THINGS-subscribe@yahoogroups.com they'll keep you posted on whats happening around the country. Please pass this on to people you think might be interested, have a good christmas, cheers.

The Wormholes play at the Lazybird club, upstairs in International Bar, Dublin on Sunday 15th July 2001 around 9pm. Its a loose vibe at this club and there may be some collaborative action from members of Memory Cells too. Corner one of the band members and get a CD for cheap!
Memory Cells 'We Have Found the New Jerusalem' album is now available in UK/Europe from Cargo UK. Some downloadable tracks from the album are now available at www.alpharelish.com where you can also buy it. A video was made for 'The Slow Flash' featured on Road-Relish 7" no.7. Hopefully you'll get to see it sometime. In April 2001 Memory Cells laid down the first of some new tracks for what may be their next album, working titles are 'Musick Magnetica' or 'Magnetic Touch' They've been working on a lot of loops and plan to thicken the basic tracks with a lot of overdubs. Its very early days yet and things are still fairly unfocused but their working. Their also proud to have been asked to remix a track from Daniel Figgis' magnum opus 'Skipper'.
In June 2001 the Ancient Records offshoot, Ancient Films, attempted an ambitious film project that was to be shot in locations in Vienna, Czech Republic, Poland and Berlin, however due to ethical reasons the project was aborted. Filming of The Ossuary in Kutna hora in the Czech Republic went as planned but after arriving in Vienna the rest of the trip's filming was spent firmly in tourist mode. A full account of what happened may appear on the Ancient Films section of this website.

Its been a great period for releases and gigs lately. Heres some of the finest. Jubilee Allstars Lights of the City, 300 on vinyl, great album from the best song writers in Dublin. The cover is a painting of their favourite places, try and find them all! Current Road Relish 7" with David Kitt and Dave Cleary is well worth tracking down. David Kitt played a few blinding shows at Cliftomania, the Road 7" launch and with the mighty Dacianos at the Cobblestone. Next David Kitt, Dacianos show at the Cobblestone is on 14th September. The Wormholes support US band Windsor for the Derby on 18th April in Whelans, Dublin. They've been steadily rehearsing and home recording for the past few months now since last sessions with Alan Lambert at Temple Lane in Dec '99. Dublin electronica duo Brotherhood of Bob have been collaborating and remixing with the band and although finished tracks have emerged the process looks like continuing between both camps for some time yet. 'Parijuana' is soon to be licened for a UK release, more details soon. Thanks to anyone who turned up for the launch of 'Night', seems like a long time ago now, but a good experience and a nice way for us to release the album, cheers. Memory Cells ambient film 'No People Here' is available now on VHS by mail-order or you can pick it up exclusively at Road. Its 45 minutes of mysterious mountain top landscapes, ruined buildings and deserted beaches and more of the same. If there's a theme it's time, that and the absence of people. 13 tracks in all, 5 from 'Night' and that leaves 8 drawn out originals culled from 'Night' sessions. Some extra visual stuff too if you let the tape run awhile! In case you heard otherwise Memory Cells will not now be supporting Jim O'Rourke in Dublin due to the time factors of it being an early show, sorry. 'Night' has been repressed in a second edition of another 500, this time with a red background on the CD, collectors take note! 'Night' is now available online at www.alpharelish.com and you can download a sample there too (check out the discography at this site where there are also a couple of mp3s). You can, as always locate it at www.groov.ie\road for purchase. Even more sample downloads of 'Night' available at www.thumped.com. A Memory Cells site is currently under construction, more details when its ready (editor's note: 'well it's finally ready Stephen , sorry 'bout the delay'). Memory Cells continue to rehearse and record.

Memory Cells ambient film 'No People Here' exists so far in a next to final edit; titles, grafting soundtrack to video master tape and hopefully not too much more editing is about to be done with a pro any day now. This will be available on VHS by mail-order only sometime after album, not long. A promo video for 'Spanish Prison Dance' is also due to be finished along with the film, if there's space it'll be included with film.
Memory Cells recorded their last material of the century on the 2nd last night of 1999. New equipment and new location aided a sweet session. More quiet anthems of tomorrow were captured on magnetic tape.
The Wormholes have been recording at Temple Lane with Alan Lambert contributing and Stephen from Memory Cells recording. Two sessions have been done so far and more are planned. A collaboration with a Dublin electronica type was also done a while back. Other label/business stuff going on, too early to talk about here. 'Parijuana' is doing well review wise, to be released in Britain and elsewhere soon.

Memory Cells debut album 'Night' is on schedule for release before the end of the year. It's been recorded, mixed, mastered, a pressing plant has been selected from this very city, arguments over artwork are about to ensue and conversations about the next one have already happened! A film is also being made to appear in the new year. Realistically probably only available on VHS by mail order and selected shops, limited to demand. Being filmed over the last year by Memory Cell Stephen whose other credits include the impossible to find 'Last Night of Phunk City:A Clubbers View', unfinished video for The Wormholes (not his fault) and upcoming Anodyne promo. So far it's shaping up to be an ambient type video with a Memory Cells soundtrack culled from current material, some exclusive. Among the images you can expect to keep you amused are endless ruined churches, lakes, beaches, mountains, streams, sheep, driving along country roads. A video for some track off the album will have to be compiled from this footage for TV, so if this actually gets aired it will give you a clue of what to expect. In the first one of these mail outs the connection between the two bands was explained briefly. Well to expand on that point and for the benefit of newcomers, this is the story.
"Anthony Carroll of The Wormholes and Adrienne Flynn had an idea for a band and asked Stephen Rennicks ex Buckle if he'd join on guitar. He agreed and then nothing happened. The idea was in danger of becoming just that, an idea. Finally as the three pre Memory Cells sat together transfixed at the stage below them as Bonnie Prince Billy performed the first of a two night run at Dublin's Whelans venue the idea, less than 24 hours after his second show, had become a reality. Sometime on that heady first night the name Memory Cells was discussed, instantly it was agreed upon, the name gave them focus and the inspiration was all around. The fairy tale never continues, but it was stretched as far as it could go. Lots of tracks were written in a quick burst of rehearsing and recording, Anthony and Stephen quickly abandoned their familiar instruments and picked up what was lying around and learned as they went; at every session, first time drummer, Adrienne would build her kit into new shapes and learnt how to keep the beat fast. From the end of January till well into the summer of this penultimate year of the 20th century they played only at night and rarely the same thing twice. They didn't know it at the time but the best of these early sessions would, before the year was out, appear on their debut album. On listening to this album leave your preconceptions behind. They have tried to capture that magic of creation, those rare moments when improvisation yields something that has an element that can never be repeated under studio conditions. Luckily for the band technology has caught up with this idea and the results can meet today's sonic standards. This may be the only time they have the freedom to express themselves this purely and honestly. Indulge them."
